If the label is faded, we read the board itself. Gates from before about 2010 used a PR433 receiver module; newer ones use the plug-in R2 style. Getting that wrong means you install a part that “should” work and then spend an afternoon chasing a gate that still won’t move. - Remote works close up, not at the street. The receiver antenna or the receiver board itself is going out. You’ll stand in the driveway clicking from ten feet away, but from the car at the curb, nothing. That’s a receiver sensitivity drop, and it gets worse fast in Texas heat.
- Keypad works morning and evening, dead in the afternoon sun. The keypad face expands in heat and the membrane contacts lose connection. We see this mostly on the older Elite wireless keypads after five or six summers in Coppell. It’s not you fat-fingering the code.
- Gate opens but won’t close on its own, or closes and immediately reopens. The loop detector or photo eye circuit is sending a false obstruction signal. Access control doesn’t mean just the remote; the safety inputs on the Elite board are part of the same system, and a flaky loop detector will drive you crazy.
- You hear the board click but the motor doesn’t run. The access control side is sending the command, but the relay isn’t passing power to the motor. On Elite boards that’s usually a relay that’s welded or burned open, which happens after years of Texas lightning storms or just hard daily cycling.
- After a power outage, the gate forgets its remotes and limits. The board’s memory battery or the board itself is done. It should hold programming through an outage. When it doesn’t, you’re about to spend every month reprogramming remotes until the board gets replaced.

DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself before you call. Open the control box and look for ants (they love the warmth of a board and they will short it), check that the keypad face isn’t cracked, and make sure the breaker didn’t trip after a storm. That’s about where I’d stop. Access control boards carry line voltage on one corner and low-voltage logic on another, and probing around with a multimeter on a live board is how a fifty-dollar diagnostic turns into a four-hundred-dollar board replacement plus a blown transformer. If the gate is opening on its own or the safety eyes aren’t stopping it, shut the opener off at the breaker and call us. A gate that won’t stop is not something to debug from a YouTube video.
